RE: Idea for heat in a conversion/camping van

Coleman makes two catalytic heaters. I have the one that houses a green LP tank in its base and has a fan powered by a D battery. Catalytic heaters' main drawback is the generation of moisture as well as heat.
When 120 volts is available, I use an oil-filled (radiator-style) heater which has no fan and doesn't make noise. On its 600 watt setting, it holds the temp. nice and comfortabale down into the 20s. Likely would be even more efficient if I put some insulation against the big side windows. I just pull the shades and put the sunscreen in the windshield to catch the radiation heat loss there. The oil-filled heater rides bungeed to a side cabinet when moving and in the trailer when not needed.

RE: winterizing the HOUSE

Remember the traps in dishwasher and washing machine, if you didn't have them on your list. And the tank of the toilet, if not drained.

RE: lp alarm

It has a reset button on it, as I recall. Also, it's good to know that the LP alarm will be triggered by other things like hair sprays and just the outgassing of a new trailer, if you don't find any reason to suspect the LP system.

RE: Replacement House Battery

They don't require venting but are they impact-proof enough to not be a hazard inside for that reason? I've avoided them for just that.

RE: Replacement House Battery

Yes, I've found the Walmart batteries to be very cost-effective. I even have my GMC service garage trained to just hand me a copy of the battery stress printout when they do one that shows it needs replacing. Not a word any more about putting in the very much more expensive Delco. With Walmart, there is an exchange battery ahead without any hassle no more than a few miles in just about any part of the country, High Plains and Texas included.

RE: Replacement House Battery

Group 27 deep cycle from Walmart so you can have lots of places for service or warranty trade.

RE: Travel Channel

Of television, news and other public media; consider their point of view.
I was gainfully (almost) employed in broadcast media and print for a lot of years. I got out when the emphasis began to be shifted to what the advertisers wanted rather than what the audience might. The goal today is please the people who will buy your time and print. Survey after survey of media journalists show how out of touch with the real world they are and how shallow as well. You get what has evolved. Public media are "entertainment," not information in spite of all the high-hype they push at you saying how "fair and bvalanced" or "best reporting team..." et. al. they proudly pound themselves on the back with.

RE: Travel novels

After Blue Highways, read "Prairy Erth" by the same author, then go enjoy the very spots it describes in the Cottonwood Falls area of the east Kansas Flint Hills country. Cottonwood Falls has a nice, almost free, campground right in town.

RE: Success or failure: help from the manufacturer

Exemplary at both ends of the spectrum. Casita, for taking back a lemon and refunding in full. Winnebago for unquestioning support for my Itasca Suncruiser at the factory and on the road.

Every year, my thoughts go back to the Thanksgiving weekend I and my late wife spent among the wonderful local folks that gather near Ville Platte, Louisiana, at Chicot State Park to "let the good times roll!"

RE: Battery Tender

Yes, the sulfating thing is an issue with your sealed-type under-hood battery. Sulfating is a by-rpduct of the function of all lead acid batteries.

Now, about that Panic Button. Where'd you say it is supposed to be? Next to the NRA membership sticker? Do I need one of those too?

RE: Porta Potty Odor

I have one. It doesn't smell. Other than an occasional whiff of the PineSol that is added to the flush water for just that reason. Been using it that way for years and years.

RE: Do you carry a tire inflator in your B?

They make these funny looking cylinders with a cross handle on a rod in it. You put the hose on the tire, plant your feet firmly and pump up and down. And, lo and behold, the tire pressure increases at the cost of some calories. Works every time. No electrical or propane needed, just muscle.

RE: selling a motorhome

Talk to the folkls who run the adds to "Buy your Motorhome/RV" in the Motor Home/RV magazines. Give 'em a chance. I did. Deal was settled in hours and I had my money and the motorhome gone in less than five days. For $10,000 more than I would have had I tried to sell it locally.

RE: Traveling Southwest in January & February

I got snowed on in Mission, TX, one winter. It can. But it won't be cold in south Texas very long and, as an above poster notes, we have open winters here in northern Arkansas frequently.
Just do it! And look for me out there somewhere waltzing around Texas this winter.

RE: Battery Tender

Best of the bunch is called BatteryMinder. It will not only keep your batteries properly, and not over-, charged but will also desulfate them periodically for longer life. Price is under $50 and it really works! Try www.batteryweb.com and look for BatteryMINDer in the left column.
